What the organization posted
Proctored district audition run from a posted script and recorded. Each student performs, in order, the prepared exercises for their instrument, a memorized chromatic scale, twelve memorized major scales, and sight-reading. The chromatic covers a specified range per instrument in even sixteenth notes, tongued ascending and slurred descending, in 30 seconds or less at a suggested MM = 120 for Symphonic Band and 45 seconds or less at a suggested MM = 100 for Concert Band. The twelve major scales are played from memory with complete arpeggios at a minimum MM = 120 in 2:30 or less, in complete octaves within a listed range, tongued ascending and slurred descending, in circle of fourths starting on concert C. Sight-reading gives 30 seconds of study and, new this year, 90 seconds to perform. Prepared material is a lyrical exercise and a technical exercise from a specific named book and edition per instrument, with page and measure limits: for example Symphonic Band Bb clarinet uses 32 Etudes for Clarinet by C. Rose, Melvin Warner 2002 edition, pg. 21 #17 m. 1-21 and pg. 30 #26 m. 1-20 no repeat; flute uses Cavally's Melodious & Progressive Studies Book 1 (BKM Enterprises); oboe, English horn, and saxophones use 48 Famous Studies for Oboe or Saxophone (Ferling/Andraud, Southern). Repeats, D.S., and D.C. are performed unless the sheet says otherwise. Doubling instruments (piccolo, English horn, soprano sax, contrabassoon) audition on the primary instrument first; the double audition is chromatic scale plus the listed exercise only, with no other scales and no sight-reading. Jazz uses separate requirement sheets with excerpts and backing tracks.

One posting page carries separate PDFs for Middle School Band (grades 7-8), Concert Band (grades 9-10), Symphonic Band (grades 11-12), Piano (9-12), Middle School Jazz, and High School Jazz, plus sight-reading standards and scoring rubrics. Grade levels refer to the grade the student will be in during 2026-27. The page maintains a dated Updates and Clarifications list with corrections running through June 3, 2026, so it should be re-checked for late etude and measure changes before students start preparing.
