Prepare for NJMEA All-State band auditions — Regional auditions November 2025, All-State Clinic January 2026
To audition for New Jersey NJMEA All-State, you must meet all of the following:
NJMEA All-State auditions feature prescribed scales, prepared etudes, and sight-reading. All materials are released in June for a 5-month preparation window.
Major scales and chromatic scales assigned by your region. Scales typically cover 0-4 sharps and 0-4 flats. Intonation and consistency are essential.
District or region-assigned etudes released in June. You have 5 months to prepare. These assess technical control, intonation, and musicality in a composed piece.
One fresh excerpt given during audition. Practice reading new material with confidence and accuracy throughout preparation.
Download all materials from the NJMEA official website. Contact your band director for your specific assigned scales, etudes, and regional audition schedule.
All students perform prescribed major and chromatic scales, a prepared etude, and sight-read in auditions.
Major Scales
Assigned scales through 4 sharps and 4 flats. Practice in random order daily. Consistency and clean tone matter more than speed.
Chromatic Scale
Full chromatic range of your instrument. Start slowly to build intonation; then increase tempo gradually to audition speed.
Prepared Etude
Region-assigned etude performed from memory. Isolate difficult passages and spend 80% of practice on weak spots.
New Jersey has a 5-month preparation window. Materials are released in June for November regional auditions:
