What to work on this week

Use this plan for your next round, a solo, or next season. Not taking another audition? Choose music with your director and use the same steps.

5 minutes - Read before playing. Find the required passage in the official packet. Mark its start and end. Count through a rhythm that needs attention.
10 minutes - Work on one small chunk. Choose a few notes or a short phrase. Play slowly enough to follow the notes and rhythm.
10 minutes - Connect two chunks. Practice the next small section. Then join the sections, paying attention to the connection.
5 minutes - Record and listen. Record the joined passage. Follow the score while listening. Write down one thing to revisit.

What the organization posted

Wind players perform required etudes listed for their instrument plus a chromatic scale: two octaves, in eighth notes at quarter note = 120, ascending slurred and descending articulated. Starting pitch is assigned by instrument - concert F for alto saxophone, baritone saxophone and English horn, concert E-flat for French horn, and concert B-flat for all other winds. Percussion prepare three set pieces: Mitchell Peters, Advanced Snare Drum Studies, etude 12 (measures 1-23 and measure 44 to the end); Beth Gottlieb, Masterworks for Mallets, J.S. Bach Cello Suite No. 3 Gigue, pages 60-61 (measures 1-48); and Nick Woud, Symphonic Studies for Timpani, etude 25: measures 1-18, 24-31, 42-49 and 68 to the end. All required etudes must be submitted. The audition documents do not list a sight-reading component. Participation fee is $80.

How it fits each part of this audition

High school students upload their own video on SnapAudition.com and pay $20. The director is emailed to verify and does not upload. Play the full material. Each etude is one take with no splice. The scale may share that video if neither part is edited. Your face and instrument must be visible. Do not wear school clothes. No late auditions. Piccolo, English horn, E-flat clarinet and soprano saxophone send an extra video under the same payment. Two primary instruments need two applications and two payments. Videos are due Monday, November 2, 2026. The etude document says 11:50pm. The high school letter says 11:59pm. No time zone is printed.

Junior high students send two videos. Say only your name, instrument, and etude or chromatic. Videos are due 11:59 pm Friday, November 13, 2026. The junior high letter prints a $20 audition fee.

The high school letter prints both first part of December for notice and the form plus $80 due December 1, 2026. A junior high release date is not published. The junior high selected fee is $75 in the letter and $80 on the hub shop. After you make high school, rehearsal is January 14, 2027, 4:30-9:30 PM; January 15, 8:30 to 8:30; January 16 rehearsal TBA and a 7:00 pm concert at Abravanel Hall. Junior high rehearses January 15, 9 to 5, at Sage Canyon Middle School in Eagle Mountain, then a January 16 sound check at 5:00 pm and a 7:00 pm concert, concert black, own transportation.
