How a Solo and Ensemble festival works
- 1
You prepare one piece
Most states publish an official music list, often sorted into grades or classes by difficulty, and your band director helps you choose from it. Some states let you play any appropriate piece.
- 2
You perform for one judge
You play your piece, often with a piano accompanist for solos. Some states also ask for scales or sight-reading.
- 3
You get a rating and comments
Most states use a I to V scale, with I the highest. In Texas, for example, the divisions are I (Superior), II (Excellent), III (Average), IV (Below Average) and V (Poor). Many judges also write comments, which are often the most useful part.
- 4
A top rating may advance you
In states with a state festival, a I (or your state's top rating) at district or region usually qualifies you, sometimes only on the hardest grade of music.

Rules differ a lot from state to state, so always read your state's official page below and ask your director.
Preparing a piece over several weeks
Solo and Ensemble rewards steady preparation more than a last-minute push. Start early, learn the piece in small sections, and leave time to play it all the way through many times before the festival. Virtunity's structured practice plans help students prepare repertoire over several weeks, and teachers can assign the piece and follow practice history.
