All-State Band Audition Guide
Prepare for MMEA All-State band auditions — District auditions November-December 2025, All-State auditions January 2026, Conference March 2026
Eligibility Requirements
To audition for Massachusetts MMEA All-State, you must meet all of the following:
- ✓Be a student in grades 9-12 in a Massachusetts high school
- ✓Be a member of your school's band program
- ✓Have your band director submit your audition entry
- ✓Your school must be a member of MMEA
- ✓Meet all academic eligibility requirements set by your school district
Audition Materials
Massachusetts MMEA All-State auditions emphasize both technical proficiency and musicality. Audition materials are released in late summer.
Prescribed Pieces
MMEA publishes specific pieces and excerpts for each instrument. These become the foundation of your audition preparation.
Scales & Arpeggios
All major and minor scales are expected. Judges evaluate tone quality, technical facility, and musicality in scale performance.
Sight-Reading
You'll sight-read unfamiliar material during your audition. Accuracy and confidence in reading unknown passages are critical.
