What to work on this week

Use this plan for your next round, a solo, or next season. Not taking another audition? Choose music with your director and use the same steps.

5 minutes - Read before playing. Find the required passage in the official packet. Mark its start and end. Count through a rhythm that needs attention.
10 minutes - Work on one small chunk. Choose a few notes or a short phrase. Play slowly enough to follow the notes and rhythm.
10 minutes - Connect two chunks. Practice the next small section. Then join the sections, paying attention to the connection.
5 minutes - Record and listen. Record the joined passage. Follow the score while listening. Write down one thing to revisit.

Audition window: SnapAudition opens January 1, 2027; auditions are due NOON March 2, 2027. Pay the $30 fee by noon February 23, 2027 or the upload is disregarded. Jazz, Bands and Orchestra camp is July 27-31, 2027 at Concordia College in Moorhead; All-State Jazz Band performs February 17, 2028; bands and orchestra perform February 18-19, 2028.

What the organization posted

Recorded video auditions only. Woodwind and brass candidates record the entire assigned scale page in one continuous take; percussionists have no scale requirement and instead record snare and mallet etudes. French horn players may choose between two scale sets. Etudes come from ETUDE SET 2 for 2027: woodwind and brass etudes are obtained from auditionsolos.com under the MMEA_2027 list, and percussion etudes are posted in a Google Drive folder linked from the page. Where printed music offers ending choices, students must use the ending specified on auditionsolos.com for their instrument. Each component is a separate video file, each recorded in one continuous take, and no file may exceed 3 GB. The page does not list a sight-reading component. Rubrics, practice videos and MacPhail Center tutorials are linked as preparation resources. The sponsoring teacher uploads through SnapAudition; the audition fee is $30. A name sign must appear in every video. Headphones and metronomes are not allowed.

How it fits each part of this audition

A recorded audition: Practice the run-through. Record a final take and listen back in Review before you record the real one. A saved take stays private until you choose to share it with a connected teacher.
Tone and intonation: Every judge listens for these. The tuner shows your note and how sharp or flat it is, and the drone gives you a steady reference pitch for long tones.
Tempo: Tap tempo finds a marked tempo, and subdivision clicks keep your eighths, triplets and sixteenths even.
