What to work on this week

Use this plan for your next round, a solo, or next season. Not taking another audition? Choose music with your director and use the same steps.

5 minutes - Read before playing. Find the required passage in the official packet. Mark its start and end. Count through a rhythm that needs attention.
10 minutes - Work on one small chunk. Choose a few notes or a short phrase. Play slowly enough to follow the notes and rhythm.
10 minutes - Connect two chunks. Practice the next small section. Then join the sections, paying attention to the connection.
5 minutes - Record and listen. Record the joined passage. Follow the score while listening. Write down one thing to revisit.

Season: 2026-27
Audition window: Audition submission window opened October 5, 2026 and closes October 30, 2026 at 11:59 p.m.; results released November 16, 2026; All-State Festival January 28-30, 2027. Checks had to be received by September 30, 2026; remaining payments are due October 30, 2026. The $75 participation fee is due January 8, 2027.
Instruments: all band instruments (winds, percussion, and jazz)

What the organization posted

Directors record and submit auditions through Opus Events. Band woodwinds and brass play a chromatic scale from any starting pitch and the posted 2026-27 lyrical and technical cuts; there is no band sight-reading. Jazz requirements include the posted scales, etude and improvisation; drum set has its own solos and sight-reading. The $20 audition fee is paid by the school director, not parents or students. Students must be school band members and their teacher must be an NMEA member.

How it fits each part of this audition

Chromatic scale: Practice it with the metronome at the marked tempo and the tuner in the same window, so you can see your note and how sharp or flat it is.
