What the organization posted
Three audition divisions: Junior, Clinic, and Senior. Winds play required major scales from memory in any order (number of keys and octave range set per instrument, roughly 8 to 12 major keys and 1 to 3 octaves; any note grouping such as eighths or triplets is allowed), plus a memorized chromatic scale over an assigned range with a one-minute limit, minimum tempo quarter note = 120, in eighths or triplet eighths, worth 5 points. Percussion have separate technical proficiency requirements in place of the wind scale list. All candidates play a prepared solo from the SCBDA 2026-27 assigned solo list (winds: two-minute limit; percussion battery and mallets: one minute; timpani: two minutes) and sight-read, with separate published sight-reading guideline sheets for the Region round and the All-State round in each division.

The 2026-27 solo lists are posted as dedicated pages ("Senior Solos for 2026-2027", "Junior Solos for 2026-2027") but the actual titles and PDFs are behind an SCBDA director login, so the named repertoire could not be read. Scales, chromatic, and sight-reading guideline pages are public. What the organization posted
Four components. (1) Prepared etude from the SCBDA jazz audition etude list, with play-along recordings provided; rhythm section players must comp or walk a bass line through the etude from the supplied chord changes. (2) Scales within a 60-second limit: high school plays five chromatically adjacent major scales in two octaves plus additional one-octave scales, with the specific set assigned by instrument; middle school plays three selected major scales. (3) Improvisation over the Jamey Aebersold Play-A-Long series: high school uses Volume One, Track 8, Blues in F; middle school uses Track 7, Blues in B-flat. Drum set players play required styles at set tempos with fills and then trade fours with the recording. (4) Sight-reading in two contrasting styles, one always swing and the other ballad, Latin, or rock; rhythm section players sight-read chord symbols as well as written parts.
