What to work on this week
Use this plan for your next round, a solo, or next season. Not taking another audition? Choose music with your director and use the same steps.
- 5 minutes - Read before playing. Find the required passage in the official packet. Mark its start and end. Count through a rhythm that needs attention.
- 10 minutes - Work on one small chunk. Choose a few notes or a short phrase. Play slowly enough to follow the notes and rhythm.
- 10 minutes - Connect two chunks. Practice the next small section. Then join the sections, paying attention to the connection.
- 5 minutes - Record and listen. Record the joined passage. Follow the score while listening. Write down one thing to revisit.

Region auditions January 9, 2027 (some auditions may be scheduled on Friday, January 8th based on registrations); All-State callbacks January 16, 2027 at Chapin High School, also the Region makeup date; additional makeup dates January 23 and January 30, 2027. All-State Clinic March 12-14, 2027. Region clinics run February 19-20 and February 26-27, 2027 depending on region.

What the organization posted
Three audition divisions: Junior, Clinic, and Senior. Winds play required major scales from memory in any order (7 major keys for Junior, 9 for Clinic, and 12 for Senior; octave ranges set per instrument, from 1 to 3 octaves; any note grouping such as eighths or triplets is allowed). Winds in all three divisions also play a memorized chromatic scale from the lowest to the highest required note in their major scales, with a one-minute limit, in eighths or triplet eighths, worth 5 points; minimum tempo quarter note = 96 for Junior, 112 for Clinic and 120 for Senior. Percussion have separate technical proficiency requirements in place of the wind scale list. All candidates play a prepared solo from the SCBDA 2026-27 assigned solo list (winds: two-minute limit; percussion battery and mallets: one minute; timpani: two minutes) and sight-read, with separate published sight-reading guideline sheets for the Region round and the All-State round in each division.

- Jazz auditions are January 16, 2027 at Chapin High School, with weather dates January 23 and January 30, 2027. The clinic is March 4-6, 2027 at Newberry College. The requirements page itself still has no audition date.

What the organization posted
Four components. (1) Prepared etude from the SCBDA jazz audition etude list, with play-along recordings provided; rhythm section players must comp or walk a bass line through the etude from the supplied chord changes. (2) Scales within a 60-second limit: high school plays five chromatically adjacent major scales in two octaves plus additional one-octave scales, with the specific set assigned by instrument; middle school plays three selected major scales. (3) Improvisation over the Jamey Aebersold Play-A-Long series: high school uses Volume One, Track 8, Blues in F; middle school uses Track 7, Blues in B-flat. Drum set players play required styles at set tempos with fills and then trade fours with the recording. (4) Sight-reading in two contrasting styles, one always swing and the other ballad, Latin, or rock; rhythm section players sight-read chord symbols as well as written parts.
