What to work on this week

Use this plan for your next round, a solo, or next season. Not taking another audition? Choose music with your director and use the same steps.

5 minutes - Read before playing. Find the required passage in the official packet. Mark its start and end. Count through a rhythm that needs attention.
10 minutes - Work on one small chunk. Choose a few notes or a short phrase. Play slowly enough to follow the notes and rhythm.
10 minutes - Connect two chunks. Practice the next small section. Then join the sections, paying attention to the connection.
5 minutes - Record and listen. Record the joined passage. Follow the score while listening. Write down one thing to revisit.

Audition window: VMEA's festival-dates page lists auditions Saturday, January 16, 2027 at Spaulding High School, an acceptance deadline of Saturday, March 6, 2027, and the festival Wednesday, May 5 - Saturday, May 8, 2027 at Montpelier High School and U-32 High School.
Instruments: all band instruments (winds, percussion and mallet percussion); strings and voice audition into the same festival

What the current page describes

VMEA's undated adjudication-process page gives the standing audition rules. Auditions are timed: 10 minutes for non-percussionists, 15 minutes for percussionists. Wind and mallet players perform two diatonic major scales plus the chromatic scale as specified in the All State Music Festival Handbook. Students then play a prepared piece from that year's Audition Selection List, unaccompanied; adjudicators may choose to hear only selected sections, so the whole piece must be prepared. A short sight-reading excerpt follows, with one minute of silent preparation and the tempo given before both the review and the performance. The year-specific Audition Selection List and the Handbook's per-instrument scale keys are separate documents and the 2026-27 versions were not confirmed in the September 21, 2026 source check.
