- Scales and excerpts were posted by May 1, 2026 and re-posted August 15, 2026 as the official final version. Live state auditions are January 16, 2027 at Salina-South High School, Salina, with January 23, 2027 at the same site as the weather contingency date. A district-level process precedes the state audition.
- Instruments
- woodwinds, brass, and percussion (piccolo through tuba, plus mallet, snare, auxiliary and timpani)
What the organization posted
Live, in-person audition. Every wind player performs a chromatic scale slurred up and tongued down at quarter = 60 in the rhythm printed on the instrument's scale sheet, memorization not required; one major scale as written on the scale sheet with up to four sharps or four flats, also at quarter = 60 in the printed rhythm, starting on the note indicated for that instrument and non-transposed, meaning a trumpet asked for a C scale plays C on the instrument rather than C concert, with the specific key announced by the band chairpersons on the morning of auditions; assigned sections of the required etudes and solos posted per instrument as downloadable PDFs; and sight reading. Percussionists auditioning for the 2026-27 all-state ensembles must prepare the complete mallet excerpts (two), the complete snare drum excerpts (two), plus the auxiliary and timpani excerpts. Students are told to prepare exactly what is posted in the August 15 version regardless of later corrections suggested by private teachers or other sources.
Notes
KMEA runs ten districts and students must first be performing members of their district's 2026-27 KMEA Band, Jazz Ensemble or Orchestra; the sponsoring director must hold active Kansas KMEA membership (NAfME associate membership does not qualify). Registration itself sits behind the KMEA members site. Separate postings exist for All-State Jazz Band, the 12A Honor Band and middle-level and elementary choirs.

- Instruments
- jazz winds and rhythm section - alto, tenor and bari saxophone, trumpet, trombone, piano, guitar, bass, and drums
What the organization posted
Live, in-person audition using posted 2026-27 jazz material. Horn players (alto, tenor and bari saxophone, trumpet, trombone) play a full-range chromatic scale in quarter notes at quarter = 120; play etude #1 in full and then improvise over its chord changes with the provided backing track; play etudes #2 and #3 in full; and sight read an excerpt after 30 seconds to review it. Optional lead trumpet and bass trombone excerpts are posted for players seeking those chairs. Rhythm section players on piano, guitar and bass play and then improvise over etude #1 with the backing track, play etudes #2 and #3 in full, and sight read on the same 30-second review. Drummers play etudes #1 through #4 in full plus sight reading, with no improvisation track. All etudes and the scale are played without the metronome sounding; the metronome only establishes the tempo at the beginning.
Notes
This is a separate posting from the KMEA All-State Band excerpts, with its own etudes and its own scale rule. Eligibility is the same: the student must be a performing member of their district's 2026-27 KMEA Band, Jazz Ensemble or Orchestra, and the director must be a KMEA member who registers and pays for each audition. The January 16, 2027 date comes from KMEA's Instrumental Auditions page, which covers band, jazz and orchestra together.
