What the organization posted
The 2026-27 cycle uses Set 3. Per-instrument packets are posted for download and now contain the required scales printed inside the packet. Scales must be memorized and performed at a minimum of quarter note = 88, prepared both slurred and tongued; wind packets call for chromatic, major, and melodic minor scales. Each wind packet then contains four printed etudes, each with its own tempo range (for example flute Set 3: four etudes at dotted quarter = 60-80, quarter = 50-66, dotted quarter = 60-84, and quarter = 110-130). Percussion has separate general percussion and timpani packets. Auditions are performed live in person, with callbacks by section on audition day.
Notes
Missouri is a two-stage system: MMEA district All-District Band auditions come first, and each district sets its own dates, materials, and fees. The separate audition-day site missouriallstateband.org still showed the prior-year (December 6, 2025) schedule as of August 23, 2026, so the MBA page is the current one. Set 3 wind packet content confirmed directly from the posted Set-3 All-Winds PDF on the same domain.

- Audition window
- 2026-27 audition date not yet posted as of August 23, 2026; the MOAJE registration page still showed the prior cycle (audition December 6, 2025 at Hickman High School, Columbia, MO, registration closing November 25, 2025, $20 per student).
- Instruments
- jazz band instrumentation: saxophones, trumpets, trombones, and rhythm section (piano, bass, guitar, vibes, drums)
What the organization posted
Set 3 (2026-2027) materials are posted per instrument: a swing etude and a latin etude, each with a downloadable MP3 accompaniment track, plus two improvisation tunes - I Got Rhythm from Approaching the Standards Vol. 1 (Willie Hill) and Dr. Jay, an E-flat blues, from Jamey Aebersold Vol. 42. Wind players perform the melody and improvise a minimum of one chorus on both tunes. Rhythm section players take the melody on the first chorus, comp or walk on the second, and improvise on the third. Drummers must demonstrate shuffle, samba, bossa, jazz waltz, and funk. No scales are required. Auditions are played with backing tracks, and callback auditions add sight reading.
Notes
Separate posting and separate organization from the MBA concert-band audition, though historically held the same day. MOAJE's general 'Audition Procedures' page still lists tunes from an earlier set (Now Hear This!, Cantaloupe Island), so the Set 3 page is the governing list for 2026-27. Dates and fees for 2026-27 were not yet posted as of August 23, 2026 - check the page again in the fall.
