What to work on this week

Use this plan for your next round, a solo, or next season. Not taking another audition? Choose music with your director and use the same steps.

5 minutes - Read before playing. Find the required passage in the official packet. Mark its start and end. Count through a rhythm that needs attention.
10 minutes - Work on one small chunk. Choose a few notes or a short phrase. Play slowly enough to follow the notes and rhythm.
10 minutes - Connect two chunks. Practice the next small section. Then join the sections, paying attention to the connection.
5 minutes - Record and listen. Record the joined passage. Follow the score while listening. Write down one thing to revisit.

Audition window: School music educator nominations closed Wednesday, September 23, 2026 (late nominations September 24-October 7, 2026). Caregiver registration runs Monday, September 28-Monday, October 19, 2026 (late registration October 20-27, 2026). Accessibility requests are due Monday, October 26, 2026. Recorded/asynchronous auditions (Senior Commercial Band) are uploaded Wednesday, October 28 through Wednesday, November 4, 2026, with upload links sent the morning of October 28, 2026. In-person auditions: Senior Band on Saturday, November 14, 2026 at Severna Park High School; Junior Band and Senior Jazz Band on Saturday, November 21, 2026 (Junior Band at Severna Park High School; Jazz is in-person, proctored/recorded at Clear Spring, Perry Hall, Northern and Parkside High Schools). Rosters released early December 2026.

What the organization posted

Read from the Maryland Band Directors Association's official 2026-27 Senior Band (grades 10-12) materials document: the student performs one major scale drawn by the judges from C, G, D, A, E, F, B-flat, E-flat and A-flat, plus a chromatic scale of one octave (two octaves for flute and B-flat clarinet), starting on a note of the student's choice. MBDA recommends eighth-note triplets at quarter note = 72. Scales are memorized. Two prepared etudes per instrument, most drawn from Rubank Selected Studies with ISBN, page number and tempo named per instrument (flute: page 12, D Minor, and page 64, Capriccio in D Major; B-flat clarinet: D minor and Allegro; trumpet: D major and Largo Cantabile). Percussionists perform snare rudiments, keyboard percussion scales, timpani rolls and auxiliary exercises drawn from Advanced Etudes for Snare Drum, The Solo Timpanist and Bach for Marimba. Sight-reading is required and the music is handed out at the audition. Junior Band and Senior Jazz Band each have their own separate 2026-27 materials documents with their own requirements.

MMEA also runs All State Senior and Junior Orchestras, not covered on this page. MMEA states the 2026-27 audition schedule differs from prior years, and the school music educator nominates and the caregiver registers. The recommended fee is $20 per audition; late nomination is $35 per form and late registration is $25.

How it fits each part of this audition
