What to work on this week

Use this plan for your next round, a solo, or next season. Not taking another audition? Choose music with your director and use the same steps.

5 minutes - Read before playing. Find the required passage in the official packet. Mark its start and end. Count through a rhythm that needs attention.
10 minutes - Work on one small chunk. Choose a few notes or a short phrase. Play slowly enough to follow the notes and rhythm.
10 minutes - Connect two chunks. Practice the next small section. Then join the sections, paying attention to the connection.
5 minutes - Record and listen. Record the joined passage. Follow the score while listening. Write down one thing to revisit.

Audition window: Audition material released March 1, 2026; Acceptd application platform opened April 2, 2026; applications and recordings were due May 31, 2026; results announced August 31, 2026; acceptance form and $225 membership fee were due September 30, 2026. OMEA's hub page prints the year on the April 2, 2026 opening, so the timeline is the 2026 cycle for the 2027 ensembles. Ensembles perform at the OMEA Professional Development Conference January 28-30, 2027 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center.

What the organization posted

Recorded, audio-only submission through the Acceptd platform (MP3, OGG, M4A, WMA, WAV, AAC, or FLAC accepted). Band and orchestra-winds applicants record two assigned etudes from a named book for their instrument plus a solo from the OMEA Class A or B list, with piano accompaniment strongly recommended. Named etude sources include Voxman Selected Studies (Rubank) for flute (p. 8, p. 50), oboe (p. 10, p. 38), clarinet (p. 6, p. 42), saxophone (p. 15, p. 41), trumpet (p. 23, p. 24), and trombone/euphonium (p. 22, p. 43); Weissenborn Method for Bassoon 50 Studies #9 and #28; Rhoads-arranged Weissenborn Advanced Studies #6 and #23 for bass clarinet; Pottag Preparatory Melodies to Solo Work #26, #66, and #93 for horn; Grigoriev/Hawes 50 Etudes #18 and #29 for bass trombone; Blazhevich 70 Studies for BBb Tuba Vol. 1 #9 and #24. Percussionists record all three etudes (Mitchell Peters: Fundamental Method for Mallets Reading Study #1, Advanced Snare Drum Studies Etude #3, Fundamental Method for Timpani Etude No. 57) plus a keyboard-percussion solo. The band section does not list scales or sight-reading; strings are told to record two scales. Jazz saxes and brass record a chromatic scale up and down for range and tone, then play-along heads on Sack of Woe (Aebersold Vol. 13) and No Smokin' In Here (Aebersold Vol. 114), with two improvised choruses required for solo chairs; piano, vibes, and guitar play I Remember Grant and No Smokin' In Here; bass and drums play I Remember Grant and Clear as a Bell, and both include a swing chart with the home ensemble.

Notes

Eligibility is grades 9-12 for 2026-27 and current membership in the corresponding school ensemble; $20 application fee to Acceptd. OMEA's requirements also cover All-State Choir (excluded here) and Orchestra strings. OMEA runs a separate Region Orchestra audition with its own materials document and its own Acceptd portal, linked from the same hub page (https://www.omea-ohio.org/all-state_ensembles_region_orc.php). OMEA warns that etude and performance requirements changed for 2027. OMEA's hub page dates the Acceptd opening April 2, 2026, so the timeline's dates fall in 2026 and the application window for the 2027 ensembles closed May 31, 2026.

How it fits each part of this audition

Prepared etudes and solo: Keep the PDF in your Music Library and set the piece up in practice with the metronome, tuner and your notes beside it. Start under tempo: good reps in a row move the tempo up a step, and Keep lets you stay at the old tempo.
A recorded audition: Practice the run-through. Record a final take and listen back in Review before you record the real one. A saved take stays private until you choose to share it with a connected teacher.
