Woodwind, brass and mallet percussion candidates play all 12 major scales and the chromatic scale in the circle of fifths beginning on concert F, within a three-minute time limit, plus two prepared pieces and sight-reading. Snare and tenor drum candidates play ten rudiments including the five-stroke roll, flam, long roll and paradiddle, opening and closing each rudiment within a one-minute limit, plus prepared material and sight-reading. Timpani and keyboard percussion have their own listed materials. Prepared etudes are organized into rotating sets labeled Year A through Year E and differ by instrument, and judges choose which excerpts to hear at the audition, so a student must confirm which Year letter applies to this cycle before preparing anything.

- Audition videos must be uploaded by Tuesday, September 15, 2026 at 9 p.m. Results are posted after the second round of Lions Band auditions. The Honor Jazz Band convenes at the MBA State Band Clinic in Natchez, Mississippi, with jazz beginning Tuesday, December 8, 2026.

What the organization posted
Recorded audition consisting of scales and a prepared piece. The video is filmed in one take with no edits and no added audio effects, the student and instrument must be visible for its full duration, and it is uploaded to YouTube set to Unlisted and submitted through MBA's Google audition form. Winds, strings and piano play E-flat blues, G blues and A-flat blues scales, B-flat Mixolydian, C Dorian and a chromatic scale, plus a prepared piece. Drum set candidates play at least eight measures of their own creation in each of three styles - ballad using brushes, swing at quarter note = 140, and rock at quarter note = 120 - each ending with an original fill, plus a prepared piece. No sight-reading is listed.
