All-State Band Audition Guide
Prepare for TMEA All-State band auditions — District auditions December 2025, State auditions January 2026
Eligibility Requirements
To audition for Tennessee TMEA All-State, you must meet all of the following:
- ✓Be a student in grades 9-12 in a Tennessee high school
- ✓Be a member of your school's band program
- ✓Have your band director register you and submit materials
- ✓Your school must be a member of the Tennessee Music Education Association
- ✓Meet all academic eligibility requirements set by your school and the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA)
Audition Materials
Tennessee TMEA auditions feature prescribed scales, prepared band passages, and sight-reading. Materials are released in May for a 7-month preparation window.
Scales
Major scales and chromatic scales assigned by district. Keys typically include 0-4 sharps and 0-4 flats. Consistency and tone control are critical.
Band Passages
Excerpts from standard band literature specific to your instrument. Released in May. These assess musicality, intonation, and section blend.
Sight-Reading
One fresh excerpt given during audition. Practice reading new material with confidence and accuracy throughout preparation.

Scale & Audition Requirements
All students perform prescribed major and chromatic scales, assigned band passages, and sight-read in auditions.
Major Scales
Assigned scales through 4 sharps and 4 flats. Practice in random order daily. Precision and consistent tone matter more than speed.
Chromatic Scale
Full chromatic range of your instrument. Start slowly; build intonation from low to high; then increase tempo gradually.
Band Passages
District-assigned excerpts from band literature. Work intervals and entrances first; polish musicality and phrasing last.
Preparation Timeline (Starting Now)
Tennessee has a two-level audition system. Materials are released in May for December district auditions and January state auditions:
May-June 2025
Audition materials released in May. Download immediately. Begin learning assigned scales and band passages. Work on tone quality and fundamentals.
July-September 2025
Daily scale practice in random order. Isolate difficult intervals in band passages. Record yourself weekly. Begin mock auditions with your director.
October-November 2025
Final polish phase. Band passages should be secure and musical. Scales consistent at audition tempo. Begin sight-reading practice 2-3 times per week.
December 2025
District auditions by region. Perform your assigned scales and band passages. Results determine advancement to state auditions.
January 9-11, 2026
State auditions at Lipscomb University in Nashville (if you advance from district). Perform for state judges. Advancing students attend All-State Clinic.
Practice Tips for Tennessee TMEA Success
